Y’all prolly heard of the tag “retro soul” by now. I won’t get into it too much. (O-Dub at Soul Sides has a great write-up on it.) This has been the label given to groups like Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Raphael Saadiq (The Way I See It), Nicole Willis and the Soul Investigators, etc… Add Mayer Hawthorne to the list, who’s created quite a buzz around his first single “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out”. The first time I heard the cut was from a myspace bulletin from my homie, MikeStyles. Hard to believe that that’s the voice of this geeky lookin’ white dude you see below. Yeah, I still kinda bug out on that too!!!
I was recently reminded of this song again when my Devil’s Pie co-resident DJ Wonway put the video up on his newsletter. Check it out…and yes single came out on the heart shaped vinyl you see in the vid! Man, I need to get me one b4 its too late!
